Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix (formerly known as Sojos Europa)
Feeding Instructions:
Combine Sojos, meat, and water. Let soak in refrigerator (preferably overnight) and serve. You can mix a four-day batch ahead of time and refrigerate in a sealed container or keep larger batches in the freezer. Shake bag occasionally to keep ingredients mixed. For adult and geriatric dogs we recommend once-a-day feeding. For puppies we recommend twice-a-day feeding. (For twice-a-day feeding, split the amounts below in half.) The measurements are listed in cups.
These amounts are only general guidelines. Individual requirements will vary depending upon various factors such as metabolism, daily activity, health, genetics, and environment.
Starting Out
It is crucial to switch your animal to Sojos gradually. We recommend at least a two-week transition (4-6 weeks for older, ill, or finicky animals). Start with just a tiny bit of Sojos, raw meat, and water mixed with the food you’re currently using and gradually increase each day as you decrease your pet’s old food.
Adding Variety
We at Sojourner Farms® believe in feeding variety, and thus encourage adding veggies and other healthy foods to Sojos, in addition to meat. For small animals, mix in a teaspoon of chopped veggies per meal. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup or more for larger animals. Recommended vegetables include chopped greens, carrots, and other natural foods such as cooked rice, yogurt, or eggs. Avoid citrus fruits, onions, and spicy foods. Sojos Grain-Free also works as a great supplement to our other dog food mixes!
For animals with special dietary needs, consult a holistic veterinarian. To find a holistic vet in your area, call the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association at (410) 569-0795.

Commonly Asked Questions & Helpful Tips
Q: Is homemade pet food expensive and hard to make?
A: No. Preparation can take a couple of minutes a day. The results are well worth the small time required. Sojos has no fillers so it lasts much longer than other pet foods. When you consider the price per feeding, it’s a great value.
Q: Can I feed Sojos Grain-Free without adding meat?
A: This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. You must follow the feeding instructions and add the proper amount of meat for this food to be used for daily feeding.
Q: What if my dog has allergies?
A: Because Sojos isn’t processed into a pellet or sprayed with synthetic additives (which can burden the body with toxicity), your pet shouldn’t experience allergic reactions like they might with traditional commercial pet foods.
Q: Will my dog gain or lose weight on Sojos?
A: When feeding a raw diet your dog may lose a little fat, which is normal, and then over time gain it back in muscle. If you want to keep weight on, soak the mix overnight, or try using meat with a higher fat content. Avocados and alfalfa powder also promote weight gain.
Q: Is this food too soft to clean my dog’s teeth?
A: Dry dog food does not clean teeth. That would be like a person eating potato chips to clean their teeth. Your dog’s teeth are cleaned by a strong immune system and healthy, plaque-fighting saliva, which is the result of a healthy diet.
Q: Do I need to add a supplement to this food?
A: Unlike Sojos, traditional pet food is cooked, thus robbing it of naturally-occurring nutrients. Still, we encourage supplements to boost nutrition for sick, pregnant, or geriatric dogs, puppies, or even healthy dogs. Adding raw vegetables to our mix is a great way to provide natural supplementation.
Q: Can dogs really eat raw meat?
A: Your dog’s digestive system was designed to handle raw meat. After all, wild or zoo animals don’t eat cooked meat. We’ve been using raw meat for close to 20 years with fantastic results. Buy healthy selections of meat, always refrigerate or freeze, and follow recommended safe handling instructions on meat packaging. If you are still concerned, you can rinse meat in a solution of grapefruit seed extract or human-grade hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. If you prefer to cook the meat, add a general nutritional supplement or veggies to compensate for the nutrients lost to cooking. The important thing is to do what makes you feel comfortable.

Are Raw Diets Worth The Price?
A common misconception that we come across with folks is the assumption that raw pet food diets are more expensive than other pet food. On the surface this appears true. However, look closer and you’ll see that you can feed a raw pet food and actually save money. We went to the local pet store and took a look at the competition. Looking at “premium” dry dog food, we compared the cost per day to feed a 50 lb. adult dog. In fact, the most affordable brand we saw cost $0.87 per day. On the other hand, the Sojos raw dog food diet actually costs only $0.85 per day after including the cost of adding meat!
Here’s how our math went: If you break it down, a 50 lb. dog will eat $0.45 per day worth of Sojos dog food mix and $0.40 per day worth of meat. (We figured a pound of meat to be $2.00 and there are 2.5 cups of meat per lb. You’d feed 1/2 cup per day of meat which comes out to cost $0.40 per day.) Note: Prices determined as of January 2006.
As you can see, Sojos dog food is actually less expensive to feed than most premium pet foods. The reason is that dry dog foods contain fillers which result in more cups fed per day, which means a 10 lb bag of kibble won’t last as long as a 10 lb bag of Sojos dog food. Not only that, but these fillers, like gluten which holds the kibble together, contain little or no nutritional value. So, for the same cost or less, you can have a fresh, wholesome, natural dog food with no fillers that will also save you more money in the long run on vet bills by avoiding dog health problems. And that’s why we see raw pet food as a true value.
